Booking.com petitions for new “first 24 hours” holiday emojis

When on holiday, it’s easy to stay in touch with loved ones back home and friends around the globe through social media, texting and instant messaging, and we simply can’t live without our emojis when it comes to transmitting these experiences.

According to a recent survey by Booking.com, two fifths (38%) of travellers say that the first 24 hours of a holiday are the most memorable. But while the first day of a trip can be the most exciting and memorable (for many reasons!), are there really enough relevant emojis for the social world to communicate and truly capture these unique experiences?

Booking.com doesn’t think so. As the global leader in connecting people with the widest selection of incredible places to stay, it asked over 18,000 travellers from 25 countries around the world to select new emojis most suited to how they feel during the first 24 hours of a holiday.

The top requested emojis are:

  • Someone looking at a map (39%)
  • Someone dressed in typical tourist gear (34%)
  • Unpacking (31%)
  • A sun lounger (30%)
  • Someone taking a selfie (27%)

As a result of this gap in first 24 hour relevant holiday emojis, Booking.com has brought these to life in illustrated form and has written a light-hearted petition for Unicode (the organisation responsible for approving emojis), to include these as part of their current list of emojis.
