Fleur Newsom: Skincare During Menopause

BY FLEUR-LOUISE NEWSOM – skincare specialist at Forme Laboratories

The negative impact that menopause can have on your skin can take it’s toll. But there are many measures we can take in our everyday lives to try to ease, relieve and also prevent these symptoms.

Eating a healthy diet containing good sources of fatty acid’s found in foods such as fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and legumes, can help to keep your skin healthy but are also staples in any healthy diet. Drinking plenty of water is also integral to keeping your skin hydrated, avoiding dark eye circles and preventing the skin from becoming overly dehydrated. Avoid food and drinks which contain too much sugar, as this can cause your collagen levels to deplete which in turn causes skin damage and further wrinkles. Try to avoid too higher in take of caffeine and alcohol which can make you dehydrated, cause red blotchy patches to your skin and also exacerbate menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and sleepless nights. Up your in take of foods which contain anti-oxidants such as blueberries, dark chocolate and leafy greens, and sources of Vitamin C as these will promote good skin health and help to protect your skin from free radicals – as well as ensuring you protect your skin from the sun, even in winter, as this is known to be one of the biggest causes of skin ageing.

Gently exfoliating your skin with a soft textured cloth or sponge once or twice a week helps to remove dry, dead skin cells to avoid blocking pores which can lead to blemishes and annoying spots. Stratum C Gentle Cleanser uses Rose Hip Seed Oil and Irish Moss Seaweed Extract, which are packed with antioxidants and help to replenish lost vitamins to the skin during menopause. Cleansing, toning and moisturising regularly will help to maintain a healthy balance of oils in your skin. Stratum C Calming Toner will help to balance pH levels and also contains CoQ10 for powerful anti-oxidant protection, Aloe Vera to calm and soothe, and Hyaluronic Acid to deeply replenish moisture levels.

The Stratum C range has been designed specifically for sensitive menopausal skin, which becomes thinner as we age. The lack of oestrogen causes collagen levels to dramatically decrease and often ageing is accelerated around the time of menopause due to these hormonal changes. Stratum C Protect Cream and Repair Serum have been scientifically formulated to increase your body’s natural collagen levels by 70% after 28 days, reducing lines and wrinkles by 45%, by using the optimum combination and concentration of peptides, which are naturally occurring amino acids and the building blocks of life, and Hyaluronic Acid, helping to keep our skin hydrated, plump and youthful. The range contains NO parabens, MI, artificial colours or fragrances, and uses a mild preservative system making them ideal for achieving balanced, healthy skin during menopause.

Stratum C is available on the high street from Harvey Nichols (including Knightsbridge), Champneys (including Enfield), and John Bell & Croydon London, and is also available online from specialist skin care retailers.
