Julian Ward joined JW Steakhouse as Head Chef in 2013, bringing with him 21 years of experience in both London and the USA, joining from the Fox & Grapes in Wimbledon; brainchild of two Michelin starred Hibiscus Chef, Claude Bosi.
Ward hand selects, ages and carves the restaurant’s signature cuts and is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about his craft with selection of breeds an ongoing process, meaning that only the very best on the market at that time is what is served to guests.
JW Steakhouse’s signature steak is the dramatic 32 ounce, on-the-bone rib eye aptly named ‘The Tomahawk.’ This unique cut can only be found at JW Steakhouse. The restaurant is as famous for its menu as its steaks of the month, where a specially selected cut and/or breed is on the menu for that month only, allowing both new guests and regulars to try something out of the norm.
Ward’s menu also offers a wide array of authentically prepared dishes, which includes true Maryland-style lump crab cakes, line-caught cod fish and chips, crisp salads and pan seared Scottish salmon. Side dishes include creamed spinach and towering onion ring stacks, along with a locally sourced market potato menu, including a twice-baked stuffed potato and bourbon sweet potato mash with a marshmallow crust. A mouth-watering dessert selection completes the menu, with JW Steakhouse’s signature cheesecake the stand out dish. The cheesecake has garnered global recognition as one of the best this side of the Atlantic, with Johnny Depp having dined at JW Steakhouse on more than one occasion citing its reviews as the reason for his visit. It’s a must try!

The SLOAN! Review
Upon arrival we where greeted with an intriguing cocktail list full of “unapologetic and independent spirit”. JW Steakhouse has its own Jim Beam single barrel with each glass full bodied, smooth with oak, vanilla and a hint of caramel. The selection of cocktails include Bourbon bar specialties and Bourbon dessert cocktails. We choose The Phoneix and an old fashioned.
To start we had fried calamari a good test of any restaurant as to whether they err on the side of “pub grub” or gourmet food; JW Steakhouse did not disappoint registering at the superior end of the calamari scale. We also choose the Maryland crab cake. The seafood was fresh and a crab rich concoction of yumminess old bay spice and JW secret ingredients.
For our main course we ordered the Kangaroo cut steak and the USDA cut Angus Rib Eye “Tomahawk” steak (to compare to the British cut Angus) and ordered both steaks medium-rare the later with a blue cheese crust and the former with a side order of ‘Oscar’ Lump crab, asparagus béarnaise and jumbo prawns. The seasoning is generous and well balanced and on this particular occasion America won out in the tenderness competition with its corn fed beef over the grass fed British beef. However the grand and impressive 900g “Tomahawk” was definitely a talking piece and worth ordering. We were very impressed to hear a fellow diner order the 1.5 kg tomahawk and even more impressed to see him finish it! JW Steakhouse have an impressive specials board with everything from Wagu beef to honey glazed carrots making an appearance not to mention the larger cuts of meat and Porterhouse combinations.
We finished with the trademark cheese cake which if you have room for is a must to order, however it is a dish for sharing, or a doggy bag will need to be ordered! JW steakhouse brings the best tastes of steak from over the pond and is a definite must for meat lovers!
