Smith & Wollensky London is located in the historic Grade II-listed Adelphi Building off the Strand. This is the boutique steakhouse’s first opening outside of the US, with locations in cities such as New York and Miami, so when we were invited to dine here, we were looking forward to experiencing the restaurant’s same brand of warm American hospitality that has made it America’s favourite steakhouse.
Set against a handsome backdrop of mahogany panelling, buttery green leathers and vibrant pops of red, Smith & Wollensky has been designed by interiors superstar Martin Brudnizki. From the glamorous reception through to the 1920s-inspired artworks on the walls, the restaurant evokes all the elegance and timeless appeal of Smith & Wollensky’s rich heritage across the pond while capturing the essence of London’s current dining scene.
The restaurant has both a dry ageing room and a butchery on-site for true field to fork traceability. The USDA Prime beef is selected from the top 2% of beef in the US for its rich and even marbling. The meat is dry-aged for no less than 28 days to increase tenderness and intensify flavour for the very best steaks in London.
Committed carnivores are not disappointed with USDA Prime steaks including the awe-inspiring 24oz Cajun marinated bone-in rib steak which we were keen to try. The old-school chalk board displays Smith & Wollensky’s Butcher’s Specials vary regularly from a Porterhouse to T-bone steaks while other meaty morsels include the signature Wollensky’s burger.
Fish lovers are not forgotten with a decent choice of fish and seafood including the signature shellfish platter which makes the most of the bounties of the sea. Platters of varying sizes include the likes of lobster, crab, oysters and clams served over crushed ice.
Buttermilk onion rings and truffled mac ‘n’ cheese are just two of the moreish sides on offer and with the drinks menu you are spoilt for choice with 30 classic cocktails served with a contemporary twist – from Martinis and Manhattans.
For our VIP and celebrity friends looking for the perfect place for stylish soirées and plush parties, Smith & Wollensky London has three private dining rooms with room for up to 50, including the luxurious Teddy Roosevelt Room, which comes complete with its own bar and dedicated bartender.
The SLOAN! Review
All the cocktails are divine we thoroughly recommend trying one… or two… before dinner. We chose the Classic Old Fashioned made with Bulleit bourbon, Brown Sugar & Angostura bitters and the Pain Nullifier made with Mount Gay Rum, Blackwell Rum, Lime, Orange, Pineapple & Coco Lopez. Both were mixed well and were rather strong. Look closely between the glasses to see that Smith & Wollensky support Movember. That is what we love to see.
An amuse bouche to start, tuna, chilli and a spicy sauce (chef’s secret!)
I chose the Seared King Scallops which were served with a Butter Bean & Carrot Purée and the most wafer thin piece of bacon that provided a sharp salty taste which was probably one of the best pairings I have seen with scallops in a long time.
My dining companion chose the Jumbo Lump Crabmeat to start
My dining companion had the New Season Lamb Rump served with courgettes & roasted cherry tomatoes.
Buttermilk Onion Rings were large enough to be a collar for Puppy Gizmo!
A overly generous portion of Truffled Mac ‘n’ Cheese but we devoured every last morsel.
I choose the 24oz Cajun Marinated Bone-In Rib-Eye. But the other choices include USDA Prime Dry-Aged Steaks such as the 14oz Sirloin or the 21oz NY Cut Bone-In Sirloin.
Take a closer look at the the succulence of the steak. We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the meat room which shows the process of how they age the beef on site for at least 28 days. Each piece of meat has a turn around the room as if it belongs in a Jane Austen novel, being moved daily to it’s next position. it is almost balletic in preparation and the results do show through in the taste and texture of the meat.
The desserts were divine. I thoroughly recommend leaving enough room for them. We choose the passion fruit cake. They are super generous portions so don’t feel bad if you need to order one portion and two sets of cutlery!
To my delight they had my initals on the biscuits!
On closer inspection I think this stands for Smith & Wollensky. But great initials!
I had noticed the paparazzi outside as we entered and on a trip to the wine cellar with our friendly general manager we were told that there was a private dining function below in support of HIV awareness. Popping my head around the corner I was delighted to see some of my friends and none other than Philip C Baldwin giving yet another inspiring speech about his journey. He always delivers such a positive message. I was also delighted to see Katie Price and Lauren Pope supporting the cause along with a great turn out. I crashed the party for a little while to catch up with everyone and it was good to see such a great vibe at Smith & Wollensky be it at the private party downstairs or the buzziness and vibrance of upstairs.
I thoroughly recommend this venue but suggest a very light lunch beforehand or no lunch at all!
