From crusty sourdough pizzas to Sardinian inspired classics, neighbourhood Italian restaurant Amici Miei, Shoreditch, introduces admirable dishes to its menu, taking inspiration from the finest regions across Italy. As I enter the restaurant, funky dance beats in the background add to the cool trendy ambience of this neighbourhood restaurant with exposed brick, wooden floors and retro furniture added to the urban vibe.
The new menu does not include your typical paint-by-numbers Italian dishes. Cristian Nocco, owner of Amici Miei, has created a menu that combines popular ingredients from the different regions so customers can relish in the diverse flavours of Italy’s various cooking styles. One such dish on the antipasti menu is the Tartare di Tonno e Avocado – a super fresh tuna tartare served with avocado and dill…
The tuna tartare joins antipasti classics like the Frittura Di Mare – deep fried tiger prawns and squid (including my favourite part – the crispy tentacles) served with garlic mayonnaise.
The moreish salty seasoning on the lightly coated head-on prawns and calamari rings and tentacles is complimented by a sharp zesty mayonnaise which paired well with the rich savoury flavours.
On the pasta menu, one of the latest dishes is the Ravioli Ripieni di Burrata e Gamberi – burrata and king prawn ravioli in a cherry tomato bisque with basil and garlic…
A new secondi dish is the Tonno Scottato – seared tuna served with puntarelle, chia seeds, orange mayo and carasau bread…
Joining the restaurant’s famous sourdough wood-fired pizzas is the new Supercazzola – mozzarella and porchetta slow roasted pork belly…
Vegetarians can feast on the classic Vegetariana topped with tomato, mozzarella, grilled aubergine, courgette, mushrooms, peppers, black olives and garlic oil. The pizza sourdough is made using a slow rising process of proving for over 48 hours then cooked at a blistering 450°c, making the perfect light crispy base for the Italian ingredients. The super fast cooking ensures the vegetables retain their fresh flavour and texture whilst the pizza crust crisps up beautifully.
It’s interesting to note that the sourdough pizzas are not overwhelmed with mountains of cheese like in other pizza establishments which allows for the other toppings to come to the forefront so one can truly appreciate the fresh authentic flavours.
If you have saved enough room for dessert, we highly recommend the Angioletti Alla Nutella – bitesize pillows of sweet deep fried sourdough drizzled with lashings of Italy’s favourite hazelnut chocolate confection of Nutella. A decadent ending to finish our delicious culinary journey through the finest Italian tastes and textures.
For something more traditional, try the delicious tiramisu or its seasonal sister strawberry tiramisu…
Amici Miei prides itself on its authentic Italian ingredients with its pasta and pizza dough made from scratch on site. The fresh seasonal ingredients are used in the traditional Italian way with the majority of the menu being homemade by the restaurant’s talented chefs. Amici Miei feels like a friendly neighbourhood Italian kitchen where you can come and relax over delicious authentic dishes whether on your own, with a loved one or with a group of friends.
