Malmaison is famous as an iconic boutique hotel brand and seeing that Malmaison London is located in a converted nurses’ home it is not surprising that for those in search of some R&R in the Capital, this is the only place to go. Located on the edge of Clerkenwell in West Smithfield, Malmaison London is one of the most stylish and conveniently located hotels in the city centre.
The matrons and their starched skirts have moved on long ago and in their place we find 97 stylish rooms and suites offering gorgeous décor, comfy beds, power showers and digital TV – perfect whether you’re touring London or visiting on business. Every impeccably appointed room allows the guest to enjoy the spirit of Mal life in style as we could see from our tour of the hotel before dinner.
Bathed in natural light and lively with an understated 1970s vibe, Malmaison London is for design lovers, Cosmo drinkers and discerning diners, and the Mal Lounge is the perfect place to kick back with a glass of champagne or one of the refreshingl Malchemy cocktails such as the Smoked Old Fashioned.
We were invited to make ourselves at home in the chic Chez Mal restaurant, which serves classic British dishes that are fresh, local and quintessentially Malmaison. Our waitress for the evening was Ellie, the most upbeat delightful and knowledgeable host we have seen this year. Her passion for food clearly complemented the high quality of dishes offered by Chez Mal.
Chez Mal is noted for being one of the best restaurants on the Square Mile, Chez Mal dares to be different with exposed brick, soft lighting and seriously comfy seating in this bistro-style dining destination. Here is a sneak peak at some of the lighter delights on offer.
Chez Mal is a fresh mix of traditional steakhouse and classic French brasserie, with bold flavours and a fun, upbeat atmosphere. There is somethimg on the menu for everyone.
The interiors combine urban style with a touch of Moulin Rouge and a dash of Las Vegas, featuring brick walls, dark wooden tables and floors, and plush leather seating but don’t let that distract you from the sumptuous delights on offer.
Chez Mal is situated in a prime location on Charterhouse Square, nestled between Smithfield Market and Barbican. Chez Mal attracts a discerning clientele with the promise of fresh ingredients created into divine dishes with fresh thinking, as expert chefs serve up iconic plates with a Mal twist. We were led into the restaurant by the warm glow of neon lights and asked our host for some of their favourite dishes.
Chez Mal specialises in French classics and expertly grilled Black Angus beef. Opening the menu are starters including prime steak carpaccio with watercress, mustard and parmigiano reggiano, pan roasted scallops with sweetcorn purée and chorizo, and ahi tuna tartare with avocado, pickled ginger, soy, lime & wasabi.
Sitting down to dinner the menu looked delightful and full of choice.
We chose the crab tacos with mango, chilli and onion…
And the goan curry mussels, with a slight kick and beautiful spices.
We paired that with a whisky sour and a champagne rose cocktail and a delightful home baked bread basket
Mains on offer consist of classics such as herb crusted West Country lamb rack served with Parmentier potatoes & mint salsa verde which we chose or you can order the Goan moules frites as a main.
For steak lovers there is ample choice of Black Angus cuts from New York Strip Steak to Ribeye with a selection of accompaniments including pomme frites, truffle mash and for those reducing their carbs why not try the pak choi with ginger & chilli or simple but healthy wilted spinach.
And a close up of the truffle mash
We took advantage of the special offer of Steak and Lobster for £30 which comes with 3 glasses of Prosecco.
We also couldn’t resist the beef mac and cheese which is the first we’ve tried. Generous portion of succulent pulled beef in a creamy cheese mac.
Desserts are decidedly decadent with the likes of classic crème brûlée vying for attention with sticky toffee pudding served with a rich pecan and caramel sauce.
Private dining and intimate booths are available at Chez Mal as well as exclusive hire of the restaurant for dinners, drinks receptions and parties. If you’re looking for a fine end to a fine meal, we recommend you choose the artisan cheese selection with fig chutney, quince & crackers.
A fun twist on the cheese plate is that it is served at the table and a knowledgeable description given for each cheese. Perfect for cheese lovers.
If like us you order too much you can always take it any remaining yummy goodies to go…
