Columbia is London’s new destination riverside restaurant, bar and BBQ terrace boasting breath-taking views of the Docklands. Admire the city’s iconic skyline as you sip on a cocktail at the sophisticated bar; enjoy a meal of ocean-fresh fish, delicious steaks and sumptuous sharing platters of British charcuterie in the nautical-inspired restaurant. Finish the evening by puffing on a Cuban on the dedicated cigar terrace with a beer, bourbon or brandy in-hand.
Located at the recently refurbished DoubleTree by Hilton London Docklands Riverside complex, the restaurant sits within the Grade I-listed Columbia Wharf building, a former dock warehouse dating back to the 17th century. At one time part of the busiest and biggest port in the world, the restaurant is inspired by Rotherhithe’s naval heritage with a beautiful mix of modern comfort and maritime charm.
Timber-clad, backed by brickwork and topped with brushed steel; the bar is a mingling of glass, brass and metal featuring an Apothecary-style display of vintage bottles. Find oversized gilded mirrors, pendant lightshades and exposed concrete with decorative patterning. The cocktail menu includes classics such as mojitos, martinis, daiquiris alongside signature serves such as Miel 7 (Havana rum, honey, Angostura bitters, orange juice) and the Rosy Lee (Beefeater gin, lychee liqueur, pink grapefruit juice). The wine list explores bins from around the world whilst a selection of chilled premium champagnes and prosecco fill the fridges.
The heated Terrace offers stunning views of the city and will provide the perfect spot for alfresco drinking and dining, come rain or shine. Cosy-up on the cushion-strewn couches and wrap up in a blanket whilst enjoying a hot toddy. A separate, dedicated cigar deck also offers table seating and a glorious view – ideal for finishing the night with a Cuban or two against the backdrop of the city’s lights.
Head Chef Rajpal Singh offers a modern British menu punctuated with international influences. From hearty breakfasts to lavish lunches; indulgent dinners and cocktails; Columbia is an all-day dining destination. Signature starters include Devonshire crab on sourdough and black pudding Scotch egg. Must-try mains include spiced cod loin served with curried risotto and shallots, lamb rump served with a bean cassoulet and fondant potato, and generous slices of grilled halloumi served with quinoa and a vegetable salsa. The ribs are a must-try too.
Sharing platters – perfect for groups to sate over with a round of drinks – include a British charcuterie board and a chargrilled vegetable ‘plank’ whilst a selection of salads and burgers is also on offer alongside a bar menu of smaller plates. The Captain’s Table – a large wooden table in a secluded section of the restaurant and seating 14 – offers the perfect space for group dining, celebrations and special occasions. The Library can be exclusively hired for up to 30 guests.
For a truly memorable event, Columbia can also arrange a bespoke lunch or dinner party to be enjoyed on a privately hired river boat for between 12 and 48 guests.
The SLOAN! Review
Here is a selection of delicious dishes that we heartily recommend from the menu at Columbia. Pre-dinner cocktails should definitely be on everyone’s agenda as Columbia’s cocktails deserve to be savoured. And to accompany them, follow our lead and order the moreish pork scratchings served with spiced tomato chutney.
We also recommend trying the unctuous Black Pudding Scotch Egg.
For a taste of the sea, lovers of seafood should nibble on the crispy Szechuan peppered squid perfectly matched with a crushed garlic, chilli and lime mayo.
Mains include juicy steaks all dry aged for 28 days and served with triple-cooked chips and a sauce of your choice.
And if you are looking for something in the comfort food category, we recommend the lamb rump served on a bed of comforting bean cassoulet with fondant potato and flavoursome thyme jus.
Sides include Heritage tomato salad and buttered spinach but we went for the impressive tower of beer battered onion rings.
To round off our meal, we shared the classic sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and salted caramel ice cream but there is something on the dessert menu to suit all tastes.
Columbia is perfectly placed for light lunches, business meetings, delicious dinners and in the Summer the city workers and residents of London Docklands can look forward to enjoying al fresco cocktail clinking on the terrace.
