Following an extensive refurbishment by hospitality group Affinity Bars & Restaurants, Chelsea institution The Henry Root re-launched in October 2015 to the great joy of its loyal regulars. The kitchen has been relocated to the lower-ground floor, extending the restaurant dining area and creating space for contemporary artwork and grand mirrors, which reflect natural light from the skylight above throughout the room.
At the front, a casual, café-style area for morning coffees and brunch seats guests with dogs and young families, while sleek stools transition the space to accommodate at-bar dining, ideal for after-work cocktails and early evening small plates. Mid-way, a large communal table caters to kid’s clubs in the morning and dinner parties in the evening. A fresh new feminine colour palette of soft pink, tan and teal eases diners through the day, with deep blue velvet banquettes adding a luxurious and sophisticated touch for refined dining in the evening.
The all-day opening hours at The Henry Root welcomes guests for breakfast from 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends, serving brunch, lunch and dinner throughout. Offering healthy takes on casual, comfort-food classics during the day, there is a more refined, indulgent menu available in the evening. Brunch dishes like Smashed avocado, poached eggs on rye sit alongside salads such as Puglian burrata ‘Caperese’ with heritage tomatoes and basil and sandwiches including a native lobster brioche roll, while seabass with braised gem and mussel viniagrette and parmesan-crumb chicken schnitzel with fennel and apple slaw make for healthy, heartier lunch options.
The SLOAN! Review
SLOAN! Magazine was delighted to be invited to enjoy the elegant new interior and refreshed all-day menu of this neighbourhood dining room. In the evening, dishes including grilled halibut with girolles, spinach and ver jus and roasted rump of lamb with braised puy lentils and salsa verde are elegant enough for special occasions and destination dining, while plates of macaroni cheese with truffled lobster, USDA prime rib-eye steak and Henry’s grass-fed beef burger cater to The Henry Root’s local regulars. The evening also sees the bar transform into a Chelsea cocktail hot-spot, serving a selection of classics, fizzes and seasonal specials, perfect for post-work drinks, pre-dinner tipples and nightcaps alike.

We partook in a couple of pre dinner cocktails including an Old Fashioned and a Dark & Stormy.
We started with chicken liver foie gras parfait with sherry poached pears and a toasted brioche. The parfait which was smooth and light contrasting perfectly with the richness from the seasonal pears.
My dining companion was drawn to the chicken, bacon and avocado salad served in two portion sizes with a classic Caesar dressing which lightly dressed the salad. Order more on the side if you like a bigger hit of Caesar creaminess.
The roasted rump of lamb a popular dish on the menu did not disappoint. Cooked medium rare, accompanied with Castelluccio mountain lentils and a fresh salsa verde and jus gras.
Going a little more gastronomique chic I ordered the Henry’s grass fed beef burger with a bacon and lobster topping. Served as you would expect on a brioche bun, this burger was beautiful served rare with a nice spicy touch afforded to it from the chipotle relish. A must on our list.
The dessert menu is small and simple but caters for the majority of tastes from vanilla to sticky toffee and fruity to bittersweet espresso. I opted for the decadently rich Sticky Toffee Pudding with pecans, toffee sauce and the classic accompaniment of vanilla ice cream.
This establishment offers locals a trusted, social dining room in the heart of Chelsea, The Henry Root’s new all-day offering and popular community events – including renowned ‘Doggy Dinners’ and weekend kid’s clubs – make a welcome return to the area. As Chelsea dining rooms go, The Henry Root is probably one of the most loved and deservedly so.
