The Royal China Group consists of six of London’s most authentic and prestigious Chinese restaurants, including the luxurious and critically-acclaimed Royal China Club. Based in prime areas of London, the restaurants are centrally located on Baker Street, as well as in Bayswater, Fulham, Harrow-on-the-Hill and Canary Wharf.
The Royal China restaurants offer traditional Hong Kong Chinese dishes, while the Royal China Club provides and exclusive experience combining European ingredients within the authentic Chinese cuisine.
The restaurants all have elegant décor, contrasting rich golden hues with striking red and black features. Lacquered murals depicting an ornate Chinese illustration create a focal point within each of the five restaurants. The capacity of the restaurants varies in size from 55 to 150 covers.
The Royal China restaurants offer traditional Hong Kong Chinese dishes, while the Royal China Club provides an exclusive experience by combining European ingredients within the authentic Chinese cuisine. The group is renowned for its Dim Sum, which is served daily from Noon until 5pm and includes Steamed Seafood Dumplings with Spicy Sauce; and Pan-fried Fillet of Duck Breast Rolls. Each restaurant has a dedicated Dim Sum Chef, as well as a Head Chef.
The Royal China restaurants have the same à la carte menus. In addition, each restaurant dedicates a full page to signature dishes created by the restaurant’s individual Head Chefs. These dishes are changed frequently, while the seasonal dishes are changed four times a year. Set seven-course tasting menus are also available in all Royal China restaurants.
Situated on Fulham Road, Royal China Fulham is the smallest restaurant in the group. This intimate restaurant has a charming outdoor patio, perfect for al fresco dining now the sun is out. The signature Chinese mural covers one wall of the restaurant, while textured gold walls run along the other. The large window frontage and windows to the rear of the restaurant create a light and airy space. The restaurant seats 55 covers, while the patio seats 12 guests. This Royal China is the only restaurant in the group to offer a home delivery service.
The SLOAN! Review
This family-friendly restaurant attracts a loyal clientele from Fulham and Parsons Green. On our visit it was clear that it is popular with those whose children attend the nearby Hurlingham School. The friendly waitress allowed us plenty of time to look over the extensive dim sum and a la carte menus. As we visited the restaurant for lunch, we were offered Chinese Tea to accompany our meal although a drinks menu was not in evidence.
Having reviewed the selection on offer, we decided to start the meal with a selection of appetizers followed by dim sum. Unsurprisingly we chose Crispy Aromatic Duck which we were pleased to see was cooked to ensure the meat was soft and not at all dry. The duck was followed by Deep Fried Baby Squid with Spicy Salt and Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab with Spicy Salt. These were flavoursome and moreish with a crisp light batter that was not overwhelming. As a word of caution, those with small appetites may want to order less dishes after the squid as the portion was unexpectedly generous.
It was then time for the main event as the dim sum dishes were served. Royal China is famous for its dim sum and we were looking forward to comparing their offering with some of our favourite Chinese restaurants in London. Although we wished to try dishes a little different from the iconic har gow prawn dumplings, siu mai pork & prawn dumplings and chicken satay, we still included char siu bao – the fluffy white steamed buns filled with juicy Cantonese barbecued pork. It’s very difficult not to include this in any dim sum meal. We also chose another firm favourite, the Honey Roast Pork Puffs – golden Chinese puff pastry filled with succulent honey roast pork and topped with sesame seeds. These were delicious and one of the highlights of the meal.
Other dim sum included Deep Fried Prawn Dumplings in Garlic which was crisp without being greasy, Honey Roast Pork Cheung Fun that was steamed to perfection and amply filled, and Steamed Chilli Pork Dumplings which had a definite spicy kick but was not as overpowering hot as the name might suggest.
We also tried the Fried Mixed Meat Dumplings which were recommended by the waitress and were an interesting mix of delicately flavoured white meat in a slightly sweetened chewy dough slightly reminiscent of freshly cooked doughnuts. These were a big hit and definitely something to be savoured on another occasion.
With such delectable delights on offer it is hard not to over-order but the restaurant is the only one in the group to offer home delivery so do not be afraid to ask for leftovers to be bagged to take away with you after the meal.
Small but perfectly formed, Royal China Fulham continues to live up to the group’s reputation for serving excellent traditional Hong Kong cuisine and is a great place to enjoy tasty dim sum treats for lunch with friends or family.
