The historical Swan, first opened circa 1770, is primed to glide elegantly again to the top of the list of Surrey’s must-visit riverside pubs courtesy of an extensive transformation. Historical and original features are married with contemporary features whilst new exciting additions include an al fresco Burger Shack.
The refurbishment has made The Swan in Walton-on-Thames an ideal place to visit for some of the finest gastropub food in Surrey.
The interior is now a large open plan space boasting a curved solid oak counter and guests are encouraged to drink and dine where they feel most comfortable. Choose from a diverse selection of seating areas that include intimate small tables and comfy bench seating, designed for sharing, or relax in an armchair by the open fire.
The Swan also has a lot room outside, making it perfect to catch the summer sun. The area is the ideal place to have a party or just relax al fresco on a beautiful evening.
As one would expect from a Young’s pub, the bar offers an exceptional selection of Young’s ales and beers on tap, as well as premium international brews such as Estrella, Amstel and Peroni; a local craft lager has been introduced to add interest. My lady is partial to a Passionfruit Rekorderlig in the summer and what gentleman can resist that perennial favourite of a Kronenbourg 1664?
A global wine list and a superb selection of spirits round off the drinks list whilst classic cocktails are also available. Small plates on the menu such as sticky pork ribs, crispy squid, and a British charcuterie sharing board are the perfect accompaniment to a round of drinks.
With the weather warming up, there’s really nowhere to rival The Swan, offering over 350 covers across an expansive outdoor terrace and garden. A smaller heated seated area and newly-built outdoor bar mean that sitting in the sunshine with a drink in hand for hours is even more blissful than before. Speaking of bliss, check out the blissful depictions of swans in and around the pub.
Bringing a little street food influence to Walton-on-Thames, The Swan’s Burger Shack offers a fun and alternative way to dine. The four options available are The Classic (a British beef burger topped with cheese, Young’s ale onions and pickles), The Streaky (a Classic topped with streaky maple bacon), The Chilli Pulled Pork and The Veggie (beetroot, fennel, lentil and mozzarella).
From the kitchen at The Swan, expect to find classic British dishes, small plates and carefully-crafted specials.
The historical Swan, first opened circa 1770, is primed to glide elegantly again to the top of the list of Surrey’s must-visit riverside pubs. A hidden gem. Using only the finest British ingredients, the menu gets everybody talking with new dishes for the warmer months such as hand dived Scallops with apple and vanilla puree served with crackling.
We also enjoyed the asparagus starter… sautéed asparagus wrapped in serrano ham and served with an interesting “crispy” poached egg… delicated poached soft yolk egg wrapped in crisp filo pastry… dressed in a tasty cheese sauce.
Signature classics include beer battered cod and triple-cooked chips; Surrey Black Angus 8oz sirloin; and prime British beef burger. We chose the Lamb Wellington served with pea & mint purée, beetroot, shallots and sautéed potato.
And the Dressed Brixham Crab for my lady, served with a crunchy apple, fennel and watercress salad, skinny chips and sourdough toast.
Our appetites were satisfied so we didn’t indulge in dessert. We were sorry to miss such decadent creations such as this dark chocolate brownie with white chocolate and orange mousse and crème fraiche ice-cream which appeared on the menu earlier this year..
We hear that Sunday Roasts are legendary at The Swan, where every plate comes generously filled with seasonal veg, goose fat roasties, fluffy Yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy. Choose between 21 day-aged sirloin of beef with horseradish, roast lemon and thyme buttermilk chicken, or Dingley Dell ham hock with crackling and apple sauce – all served until late afternoon.
The Swan Room – a semi-private dining room seating 24 with original windows, low lighting and stunning tile surround featuring hand-painted swans – is the ideal space for a special occasion whether it’s a wedding, birthday, christening, corporate event or simple meet-up amongst friends, no matter how big or small. Weekly quizzes and live music sessions will also make up an exciting roster of entertainment for customers.
The Swan in Walton-on-Thames is a delightful riverside pub with delicious food and a wonderful ambience backed by the excellent friendly service. Definitely worth the journey into Surrey!
