The Meat Co has pledged to donate £1.00 from a selection of menu items on both its à la carte and children’s menus. It has also added a number of special dishes to its offering, including Madiba Malva Pudding, based on the
traditional South African baked dessert, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the fund.

With an extensive cocktail list covering classics, inspired new creations and alcohol-free choices, it would be criminal to not choose a cocktail to kick off your evening at The Meat Co. Having settled at our table, we choose Safari Gentleman and Jungle Bear to sip while perusing the bountiful menu. Safari Gentleman is a bourbon based cocktail made with Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Poire William liqueur, passion fruit syrup, fresh lemon juice and mango juice. Jungle Bear is a refreshing vodkad based cocktail made with Absolut Raspberry, Archers Peach Schnapps, fresh lemon juice, Fraise syrup, topped up with lemonade and garnished with a drizzle of sherbet.
The menu has something for everyone and lots of choice so you may wish to order something to nibble on while trying to decide which of the mouthwatering options to go for. We ordered some tasty air dried biltong for an authentic South African experience and the manager recommended we also try the Chocolate and Beetroot bread. Although this sounded off the wall, I cannot recommend it enough. The earthy beetroot only hinted through the rich bittersweet chocolate and was the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. Served warm this bread is delicious with butter or eaten on its own.
Having chosen from the menu we ordered another round of drinks to accompany the meal. Although the wine list is extensive, like us you might choose to break with tradition and stick to cocktails with your food because the choice is simply too great to miss. My dining companion chose Singalie Sunshine – a mix of Absolut vodka and Passoa sweetened with vanilla syrup and muddled with fresh kiwi, passion fruit and topped with cranberry juice. Known for my love of cherries, I tried Cherry Bomb which is based on muddled Maraschino cherries with orgeat syrup, lemon juice and apple juice.
Starters included classic Boerewors, a traditional African beef coiled sausage served on a bed of equally traditional pap which is the African version of the Italian polenta although it is somewhat heavier on the digestion. This dish is accompanied by an authentic chakalaka sauce which is reminiscent of a spicy tomato salsa or relish.
My dining companion choose the Rib Meat & Scallop Trio to start which was slow-cooked beef short rib meat topped with pan seared scallops on herb potato mash. This is a good choice for those who wish to sample The Meat Co famous beef short ribs but have their eye on another main course option.
Main courses were the Lamb Chop Hanging Skewer and North American Black Angus Fillet. The Lamb Chop consisted of a generous portion of 4 flame-grilled lamb chops marinated with spices and herbs and presented on an impressively theatrical hanging skewer with courgettes and shallots accompanied by a mint yoghurt and mash potato. All the main course portions are what I would describe as sophisticated but hearty at The Meat Co so don’t be surprised at the generosity of meat which as one would expect is the star of the show on every plate.
The grain-fed Black Angus meat is wet aged for 35+ days and is an excellent choice for those who prefer leaner meat packed with flavour. To accompany the fillet I chose Foie Gras and Scallops. The foie gras was meltingly soft with complemented the steak perfectly. The scallops were a lighter take on the traditional surf option of lobster and went well with the richer tastes of the foie gras. Although I ordered the steak Medium Rare it was still beautifully soft and tender which was clearly testament of the carefully managed quality control done by The Meat Co from pasture to plate. From the choice of homemade sauces I choose Green Peppercorn which was deliciously smooth and creamy with just the right kick of fragrant peppery spice.
We also ordered the Giant Prawns which are so big they look like small lobsters! Very meaty and wonderful chargrilled flavour, these are not to be missed.
Perfect for the romantic couple or friends looking for more variety, we would recommend trying The Chef’s Tasting Platter for dessert. As well as The Meat Co star dessert of Malva Pudding which was Nelson Mandela’s favourite, the selection includes Dark Chocolate Fondant, Brownie Sundae, Tiramisu and ice cream. The platter is an impressive way to round off the meal although the Peanut Butter Cheesecake also comes highly recommended.
