Love sushi, sake and all things Umami? We bring you tidings of great joy! Tombo, London’s one and only authentic family-run Japanese café has been treated to a fashion-fabulous makeover and to go with its stylish new look is an irresistible new menu and longer opening hours.

Already beloved by those in the know for its unique take on modern Japanese cuisine – prepared with passion using only the finest, freshest ingredients to create super-healthy signature dishes that look as exquisite as they taste – Tombo’s chic new refurb reflects the impressive fashion credentials of owner Manami. The space, with its contemporary boutique style, has been made even more inviting courtesy of a warmly welcoming colour scheme, punctuated by a selection of stunning prints by the amazing Japanese illustrator Natsko Seki, and more ‘people-watching’ perches at the front of the restaurant. Their stylish new logo featuring the eponymous ‘dragonfly’ – a symbol of renewal, appropriately enough – is also in evidence.

Green tea aficionados will of course be in heaven, with Tombo’s unparalleled selection of health-enhancing varieties, exclusively produced in Japan’s biggest growing area at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Tombo also holds the crown for being London’s only Matcha café – this vivid green tea leaf powder is renowned for its high antioxidant content and the experts at Tombo use it to create a whole host of speciality drinks, including their signature Matcha Latte. Simply irresistible!

In addition to the exemplary, fresh sushi wraps and rolls, noodle and rice bowls and their signature bento boxes and katsu curries, Tombo will now be offering an innovative selection of delicious Japanese tapas – ideal for sharing in the evening (thanks to those longer opening hours!) over a glass or two of sake or a refreshing Japanese craft beer – as well as their very own Tombo Afternoon Tea. A Japanese take on the traditional Afternoon Tea, this totally unique creation features a fabulous selection of sushi and Japanese cakes and desserts, all accompanied by sparkling sake or Tombo’s legendary green tea. Genius!

Eat in or take out, Tombo is a chic haven of healthy heaven in the heart of South Kensington’s museum district.

The SLOAN! Review

As we took in the hustle and bustle of South Kensington we found out that with good links Tombo is the perfect place to put your feet up and enjoy delectable Japanese cusine. As we arrived we noticed seating outside, suitable for the up and coming summer and a lovely glass front to the restaurant giving away its chic look and open plan kitchen.

As we looked though the beautiful menu we where invited to try some drinks from Tombo’s unusual drinks menu. With a normal soft drink menu, it was interesting to see coconut water, a variety of authentic Japanese tea, sake, and Tombo’s specialty Matcha section, featuring hot and cold Matcha combinations.

I had the Matcha latte and my dining companion had the Bonsai green tea. Having never had Matcha before it was an interesting beautifully made drink, that and the nutty flavor of the Bonsai tea had our taste buds tingling.

To start we had the Temari set, the Prawn tempura and the Onigiri. These starters where bigger than we expected. The Temari sushi came perfectly wrapped without too much rice, it made for the perfect combination. The Onigri seaweed parcel came wrapped for one but there was more than enough to spilt it and share. The Sushi was perfectly fresh and beautifully presented. Perfect for someone on the go to grab a bite on the move.

Once we had finished our starters we had alittle break and decided to try another Matcha drink combination, by this stage it would be fair to say i was a true convert.

For the main we had the Teriyaki chicken Katsu curry rice bowl and the Unagi grilled eel don rice bowl. Again the portions were a hearty size and the meat was beautifully soft. The Katsu curry comes with the chef’s special mild japanese curry and did not disappoint! The dishes where perfect to eat sitting or to grab some plastic cutlery and have on the go.

After such filling food we sampled the dessert menu. This was clearly very popular and if you want to sample it make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment as they sell out quickly. I had the Matcha cheese cake and my dinning companion had raspberry macaroon. Tombo has a really good selection of Matcha ice cream and cakes, and it is worth noting they do afternoon tea from 3-5pm but again book early to avoid disappointment.

Overall Tombo was a very pleasant experience. The service was very good and friendly. If you like Sushi, Japanese or just have a sweet tooth then Tombo is definitely worth a visit.
